Anthony D’Auria, ‘Vestigial Materialities/ Vestigial Economies’.

Vestigial steel from disused colonial railways near the Dolphur sandstone fields becomes the impetus for a seasonal way station for the nomadic Gadulia Lohar blacksmiths. Steel is melted and cast into the landscape to create forges and covered market spaces that engage with the local economies of the agrarian and quarrying villages and the proposed tourist train that will traverse the region.

The architecture follows the new logic of the vestigial cycle as steel is transformed from obsolete railway to architectural armature to smithing tool and finally into salable forged goods for distribution during the Gadulia Lohar’s peripatetic season.
